DCOM Event ID 10016

Are you using Windows 10, Server 2016 or 2019, viewed the event viewer and found DCOM Event ID 10016 with something similar to this error message:

The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{D63B10C5-BB46-4990-A94F-E40B9D520160}
and APPID
{9CA88EE3-ACB7-47C8-AFC4-AB702511C276}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM SID (S-1-5-18) from address LocalHost (using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

What does this mean?

These 10016 events are recorded when Microsoft components try to access DCOM components without the required permissions.

Solution:

Microsoft mention in their KB article “These events can be safely ignored because they do not adversely affect functionality and are by design. This is the recommend action for these events.”

Conclusion:

I have seen a lot of these errors in a freshly built Server 2016 Hyper-V VM. I was worried however it seems this is nothing to worry about.

If you are having issues it’s not due to this error message.

You can relax now. Feel better?
